CRFP concluded their week of cycling events at the World Police & Fire Games Yesterday in New York City.  The games coincided with the 10th remembrance of 9/11, which participants thought would make it a truly memorable event.  Unfortunately, hurricane Irene, and lack of planning by organizers, made it a memorable event for the wrong reasons. Events were originally planned to start August 27, but were postponed due to the hurricane.

CRFP members Bryan Stottlemyer, Dan Shaw, Ramon Colon, Jason Wehmeyer, DJ Brew, Woody Waite, and Dennis Short were scheduled to compete in the criterium, time trial, sprints, hill climb, road race, & mountain bike race at this years games.  Due to hurricane Irene, the mountain bike race was canceled and Wehmeyer was unable to compete.

After a few days of waiting, the competition finally got underway on Tuesday with the time trial. Dan Shaw, Ramon Colon, and Dennis Short were representing the team in the event.  Poor communication and lack of proper timing equipment caused major problems throughout the day.  Start times for the riders had been changed, but organizers failed to notify the riders about the change.

Short’s start time was 30 minutes earlier than previously posted, leaving him little time to warm up.  The change didn’t affect him much.  Short set a personal best pace and placed 6th in the event.  Shaw wasn’t notified of his time change either and wasn’t able to make his start. Organizers reassigned him another start time and he completed his timed run, but race officials in the timing booth missed him crossing the finish line so he wasn’t scored for the event.  Colon showed up for the event, but wasn’t able to compete because of the onset of a medical condition. He sought medical treatment at a local hospital and returned home the next day.  He is doing fine and is expected to be back on the bike soon.

Wednesday had two events, the criterium and the sprints.  Bryan Stottlemyer, Woody Waite, and Dennis Short represented the team in the Criterium.  The event was delayed by two hours because of issues with street closures.  Once the streets were properly closed and safe, the event was underway.  It started fast, as expected, with attacks coming on every lap.  Eventually a breakaway of 6 riders got away and the CRFP team worked together, along with two riders from FDNY, in a chase group to bring it back.  The gap grew to 50 seconds, but the chase was unable to gain any ground.  In the closing laps they picked up one rider that was dropped from the breakaway.  The chase group was racing for 6th place.  On the bell lap, Waite was on the front working hard for most of the lap and peeled off with about 500 meters to go.  FDNY took over the lead out and the sprint started at about 200 meters with Short finishing 7th, Stottlemyer 9th, and Waite 12th.

The sprints started in the afternoon.  Normally they are conducted with qualify rounds and then a medal round, but with time restrictions the organizers decided to conduct one sprint for all riders in each category.  Short was representing CRFP in the 800 meter sprint.  At the start, Short was in good position staying close to the front.  The full sprint started with about 250 meters to go.  Short moved up to 4th, but was unable to pass the 3rd place rider.

The hill climb was on Thursday.  A 1 mile uphill time trial with an average gradient of 9%.  Short represented the team in the event, and placed 9th.

Friday was the road race in Central Park.  Once again, the event was delayed because organizers failed to obtain enough course marshals.  Bryan Stottlemyer, Woody Waite, Dan Shaw, DJ Brew, and Dennis Short were representing CRFP in the event.  The race started off just like the crit, with attacks coming hard and fast.  Originally scheduled for 6 laps, the race was shortened to 4 because of time constraints.  On the second lap, on Harlem Hill, the race broke apart.  Brew stayed with the leading group and was looking strong.  With approximately 600 meters to go a rider went off the front and Brew gave chase.  He was unable to close the gap and then the sprint for the line started.  Brew finished 7th.  The organizers decided not to score anyone else in the race, so the other members didn’t get a placing.

The next World Games will be held in Belfast, Ireland in 2013.

Dennis Short traveled to Leonardtown, MD for the 2011 Leonardtown Criterium.  The course was a .7 mile loop through the streets of Leonardtown.

The race went pretty smooth from the start.  Two guys broke away from the field early, but no one was willing to take up the chase.  It came down to a field sprint for 3rd place and Short held on for 5th.

Steve Collins, Bryan Stottlemyer, and Dennis Short headed to Cascade, MD for the 4th Annual Fort Ritchie Classic Criterium today.  The course was a 1.3 kilometer loop with 6 turns and was held on the grounds of the former military installation.

In the morning, Short raced the Masters III/IV race finishing 8th.  In the afternoon, Short was joined by Collins and Stottlemyer for the Senior IV race.  Just a few laps into the race, Collins had a mechanical problem and was unable to continue.  Short & Stottlemyer performed well, but in the closing laps were unable to move up in the field, and finished 26th & 27th.

CRFP’s Megan Rowan competed in the Nation’s Triathlon to Benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society today in our nation’s capital.  The Olympic distance triathlon included a 1.5k swim, 40k bike, and a 10k run.

Megan’s morning started off cold and rainy, but by the time her wave started the rain had stopped.  She started off strong with the swim, but not even 200 meters into it, her left calf started to cramp, and just a few minutes later the right calf cramped as well.  With every kick, the pain from the cramps became worse.  Determined not to give up, she completed the swim by primarily using her arms.

Megan’s calves were still pretty painful during the 40k bike, but by the time she started the 10k run they just felt tight, rather than painful.  The cramps and pain didn’t slow her down much.  She finished in the top 32%, accomplished her goal of finishing under 3 hours, and she was 7 minutes faster than last year.

During the last 5 months, Megan hasn’t been able to do much triathlon specific training while in recruit school, so she attributes her improvement to Crossfit!

Did you hear that Chief?!

CRFP took the the roads of Zanesfield, OH today for the Can-Am Games road race.  The course was a 15 mile loop on rolling terrain with 1 major climb.  The Open, Senior A, and Senior B categories would race together to complete 3 loops for a 45 mile race, and the remaining categories would race together to complete 2 loops for a 30 mile race.

Bryan and Dennis’ group were the first to start, and things started quickly.  Within the first mile was the start of the climb, and it broke the field up right away, but all of the major contenders stayed together in the front group.  On the second lap one guy broke away. Dennis and Bryan started to chase him down, but backed off after finding out he was in the open category and wasn’t a threat to them.

As expected, things heated up on the third and final climb.  Two other riders from the open category attacked to chase down the other open rider ahead.  Dennis and Bryan kept a steady tempo up the climb dropping all of Bryan’s opponents, and one of Dennis’ major contenders.  There were still 4 guys in Dennis’ category left in the front group, so he knew the finish was going to be interesting.

Bryan, after isolating himself in the front group to secure his gold medal in Senior A, took to the front of the field with 1k to go to lead out Dennis for the Senior B sprint.  The speed was high with Dennis right on his wheel.  Out of the corner of his eye Dennis saw a move on the right, so he jumped to the left and sprinted off of Bryan’s lead out to take the gold in Senior B.

Ramon’s group started shorty after Dennis and Bryan.  Ramon, who is an exceptional climber, had no worries about how the race was going to unfold.  On the second lap he set a hard tempo up the climb and a select group of 4 or 5 riders formed at the front.  All but one of the riders shared the work to further extend their lead.  As they neared the finish line Ramon set himself up in good position for the sprint.  As the sprint started he put his head down and hammered away at the pedals to take the gold medal in Grand Master A.

The road race was the final competition for the Games, and CRFP took 3 gold medals.  That brought the final count to 12 medals (7 gold & 5 silvers).  Not only did they gain recognition for the team, but they gained respect as well from their competitors!

CRFP took to the streets of Dublin again for the 600 meter sprint competition of the Can-Am Games.  The course was completely flat with 4 marked lanes for 300 meters and then the last 300 meters would be an open course.  There would be 3 heats of 4 riders and points awarded for each finishing position.  The top 3 in points would be awarded medals.

The competition is difficult because it is pretty much an all out sprint for 600 meters with very little rest between heats.  The guys did well though taking 1 gold & 2 silvers for the day.  Bryan won every heat in his category taking the gold in Senior A.  Dennis sprinted to take the silver medal in Senior B, and Ramon put in a solid effort to take silver in Grand Master A.

So far the boys have racked up 9 medals, and they still have one more day left.  What will happen in the road race?  Wait and see!

Tonight was the criterium for the Can-Am Games, held in beautiful downtown Dublin, OH.  It provided a great venue for the cyclist, fans & families.

The course was very technical with four 90 degree turns.  One of which was a  fast turn that lead off of the back straight onto a very narrow street.  It wasn’t an ideal setting for a criterium which is already a dangerous race in nature.

Ramon raced first in the Grand Master A category.  He sat patiently in the field sizing up the competition as the race went on.  Ramon and a few others picked up the pace with about 5 laps to go dropping most of the field.  He was looking good on the last lap sitting in 3rd position as a rider tried to break away.  They caught the rider on the back straightaway and Ramon had a good run going into the final turn when a Canadian rider squeezed him in the middle of the turn causing him to loose momentum.  He sprinted to the line taking the silver medal in Grand Master A.

Race officials combined the Senior A and Senior B categories for the final race of the night, which allowed Bryan and Dennis to race and work together as teammates.  They both set the pace in the early part of the race trying to feel out the competition.  The field stayed together for the first part of the race until two guys in Senior B broke away.  A few laps later they caught both guys when one of them attacked again.  This time the field couldn’t get organized to bring him back, so the breakaway rider stretched out an impressive lead.

With the fast pace of the race, the main field had reduced down to about 8 riders.  Bryan was the only rider in the Senior A category left in the field, so he had secured his gold medal in that category.  The remaining riders were racing for silver and bronze in the Senior B category.

On the last lap Dennis was in about 5th position on the back straightaway.  Knowing that the turn leading onto the narrow road was going to be dicey, he attacked about 30 meters before the turn.  It proved to be a smart move as he made it through safely and sprinted to take the silver medal in Senior B.  Bryan made it through safely as well and took the gold in Senior A, after dropping all of his opponents.

CRFP”s Ramon Colon, Bryan Stottlemyer and Dennis Short Started the first of four cycling events today at the 2010 Can-Am Games in Dublin, OH.  Today’s event was the Time Trial which consisted of a 10 mile race against the clock.

Bryan competed  in the Senior A category (age 30-34), Dennis in the Senior B category (age 35-39), and Ramon in the Grand Master A Category (age 50-54).

They all three went out yesterday to ride and learn the course.  It was a nice course, not very technical.  It was pretty much flat, which meant it was going to be fast.

The race went pretty smooth for Bryan and Dennis; both putting down solid times on the flat & fast course.  Bryan took the silver medal in Senior A, while Dennis took the gold in Senior B.

Ramon’s race would have been perfect except he took a wrong turn about mid way through the race.  Race officials had changed the course slightly from what was marked yesterday, and the new markings were difficult to see.  Being an experienced veteran of the sport, he stayed calm, and focused his energy where it needed to be.  He pulled back the lost time to take the gold medal in Master A.

CRFP’s Bryan Stottlemyer took a 3rd place finish at the Grandview Grand Prix Criterium. From the start, Bryan placed himself at the front of the pack, settling into a rhythm, around the top 5 throughout the technical course. With 2 laps to go, he followed an attack when 2 riders jumped off the front and separated from the field. He found himself isolated, just of the back of the leaders for half a lap, but picked up the chase group, and worked to reel the front of the race back in. In the bunch sprint for the line, Bryan finished strong for a spot on the podium.
