Self Determination: The First Competition
Two first responders respond on a personal level

Move over Michael Phelps -- make way for Dennis Short and Ramon Colon. They have a total of 11 medals. Granted, it’s two to one and their medals aren't all gold. But, they also had to compete against an unannounced entrant during the International Police & Fire Games -- Tropical Storm Fay.

Alexandria Fire Department Firefighter Dennis Short and Washington Metropolitan Police Office Ramon Colon won medals in every cycling competition they entered during the week of Aug. 16 to 23 at the games in Orlando, Fla. Adding to the stress and increasing demands on their endurance, all cycling races were postponed at the beginning of the week due to Fay. What was supposed to be spread over a week was crammed into two days of intense competition Thursday and Friday.

Thursday's races were cycled against 40 mile an hour winds and torrential downpours. Races scheduled for Friday morning were delayed until afternoon because those downpours made it too dangerous to race.
