Short Finishes 4th in Tour of Walkersville Road Race

April 4, 2009 - Dennis Short took to the hills of Walkersville, MD for his first race of the season.  The race was a 40 mile road race which consisted of five, eight mile laps on a challenging course.  The 75 rider field not only had the short steep hills of Walkersville to deal with, but a very strong headwind in certain sections of the course as well.

The race really didn't get underway until the 2nd lap when six riders broke away from the field.  With the strong headwinds and 3-1/2 laps remaining, Dennis felt certain that the break would not succeed to the finish.  Sitting in about 6th position, Short sat content while two other teams did all the pace making on the front.

Early on the last lap the six man breakaway was reeled in, but two other riders counterattacked and put a considerable gap on the field.  The field was unable to close the gap, and the two breakaway riders stayed away to take 1st and 2nd place.  It came down to the field sprint for 3rd place, and Dennis was in 4th position when the sprint started.  He squeezed through two riders and went after the third, but was unable to overtake him, and settled for a strong 4th place finish.
